Project Overview

This project involved full redevelopment of a deteriorating irrigation canal in Chitrakoot district under the Command Area Development Programme of the UP Irrigation Department. Years of sedimentation, side wall damage, and seepage had reduced the canal efficiency to less than 50%. Wave Earth Infratech executed complete desilting, embankment strengthening, and M-15 PCC lining across the full 4.8 km stretch, restoring the canal to near-original capacity and significantly improving water delivery to agricultural zones downstream.

Scope of Work

  • Canal desilting and debris removal - full 4.8 km stretch
  • Earth excavation and disposal: 18,500 cum
  • Canal bank reshaping and compaction
  • PCC M-15 grade concrete lining of bed and side walls
  • Construction of 6 cross-drainage structures
  • Inspection road formation: 2.1 km
  • Water flow management and temporary diversion during active repair
  • Final commissioning, flow testing and handover documentation

Challenges & Solutions

Challenge

Active water diversion required during repair of in-use canal

Solution

Temporary bypass earthen channels constructed at key diversion points to maintain minimum irrigation flow during the repair phase

Challenge

Soft and unstable soil in the downstream 1.5 km stretch

Solution

Additional sub-base compaction layers added with geo-textile mat placement before PCC lining to prevent future settlement

Challenge

Remote site with limited vehicle access for heavy machinery

Solution

Temporary site access track built using compacted murrum to enable daily movement of dumpers and concrete mixers

Project Timeline

Week 1-2

Site survey, bench marking, and mobilisation of machinery and workforce

Week 3-6

Week 7-10

Bank compaction, formwork erection, and PCC lining Phase 1 (2.4 km)

Week 11-14

PCC lining Phase 2 (remaining 2.4 km) and cross-drainage structures

Week 15-17

Inspection road formation, finishing works, and water flow testing

Week 18-20

Final inspection, defect rectification, measurement recording, and handover
